Isla Isabela, the largest of the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador, is named after Queen Isabella of Spain who sponsored the voyage of Christopher Columbus. It lies on the equator, but surprisingly is home to penguins, as the waters surrounding the island are particularly cool. Imagine biking the wetlands of Isabela. Here, participants whiz by blue-footed boobies, giant tortoises, and marine iguanas. They also hop off their bikes to explore cactus forests and lagoons. The island is also home to the popular Parque Nacional Galapagos Landmark conservation area, with a marine reserve as well as a national park with abundant wildlife & flora.

Take a dingy ride in the mangroves of Elizabeth Bay and see the sea turtles everywhere and possibly even some penguins. On the fallen trees you will see sea lions, as they find this far more comfortable than the sharp lava rock below, as well as fascinating birds such as the blue footed boobies, and possibly a Galapagos hawk. Do some snorkelling accompanied by numerous turtles, and appreciate the different colours of the lava rock. Other popular attractions include El Muro de las Lagrimas (a wall built by prisoners when the islands were a penal colony) and the Flamingo Lagoon.

Las Tintoreras is a lagoon where white tip sharks come to rest. They can be seen from the trail, but it's not allowed to go snorkelling in the lagoon. The snorkelling at the beach behind is excellent however, and eagle rays and sea turtles can be seen here. A guided tour is required. Alternatively, there's a nice 2.5-3 hour (return trip) hike to the wall of tears. On the way there are lots of things to see: lakes with flamingos and other wildlife, beaches with hundreds of (really big) iguanas, beaches with sea lions, giant tortoises and viewing points. Take plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat.
