Cruises visiting Floreana & all Floreana cruises for  2019

Floreana is one of the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador. As the island is relatively flat and has a plentiful supply of fresh water, and animals for food, numerous ships over the past two hundred years would call in. How did those who passed through cleverly use this known fact to their advantage? A ‘Free Post Office’ was subsequently set up. Consisting of a slightly protected wooden barrel, anyone was welcome to place carefully addressed letters and cards into the barrel, and other visitors would always check the barrel and then do their best to take the mail to the correct address.

Yes, it is still in operation so you might like to give it a try! Perhaps most amazing of all, you will discover a miniature soccer field complete with goals that is used by tour boat crews and their tourists. Floreana is one of the smaller Galapagos Islands, whose natural spring, cave shelter and local food sources provided a beneficial location for one of Galápagos’ first community settlements. However, recent changes have enabled the creation of opportunities for responsible tourism to sustain local ecosystem and livelihoods, and the Galápagos National Park has permitted the people of Floreana to offer community-based tourism products and hospitality services.

Floreana’s extinct volcano lava base is in evidence around the coast, from volcanic cones to olivine crystal beaches and rocky shores, providing habitats to endemic and indigenous wildlife. The island has been historically conserved due to its remote 1000 km distance from the mainland and governing Ecuador, and consequently presents unique diving and conservation tourism opportunities. The site at Comorant Point offers two contrasting beaches: the first is a green sand beach, made green by the presence of olivine crystals, and the second is Flour Beach, made of fine, pulverized coral. Interestingly, Cormorant Point has a greater diversity of plants than most other surrounding areas.
