San Cristóbal Island is one of the eastern Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. Possibly the most popular activity for visitors is a walk along the beautiful waterfront promenade, which features several fountains, playgrounds for children, and an enclosed saltwater swimming area that is likely to contain more sea lions than people! Take a taxi 8 km to visit El Progreso, the site of Manuel Cobo’s infamous prison and work camp, then continue on to the Lookout that offers great panoramic views of the island. Also of great interest is the fresh water lake in the crater of a volcano. There are many land and water based tour options on offer here.

The island features a number of unique areas that make excellent tourist attractions. Perhaps the most outstanding are two offshore rock formations called Isla Lobos and Kicker Rock (also known as Leon Dormido). These islets are home to some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Islands. Isla Lobos is particularly famous for its colony of outgoing sea lions, while Kicker Rock often shelters large marine animals like sharks and sea turtles. The island itself is home to Laguna El Junco, the only permanent freshwater lake in the Galapagos.

San Cristóbal is home to 6,000 people, most of who live in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the capital of the archipelago and its second-largest human settlement. The San Cristóbal hotel, Casa Opuntia, is located directly on the island’s beautiful boardwalk, with easy access to all of the town’s restaurants and shops. The Interpretive Centre, a little museum with free entry, is worth visiting, as its many displays including dioramas and illustrations that offer an insightful historical background to the island. Also popular is an amazing world-class kayaking route along the sparsely-populated north coast.
