Isla Baltra is a small island in the Galapagos Archipelago of Ecuador. It is used by the Ecuadorian government as a military base, as well as by tourists. On boat trips look out for dolphins, whales and sharks, while accompanied by playful sea lions. Most tourism is concentrated along the waterfront where there is a range of restaurants and stores. Many even try some scuba diving, but being home to the Galapagos National Park, the Darwin Foundation and the Charles Darwin Research Station, there is much more to investigate. Upon your arrival you will have to pay US$ 100 as national park fees.

Baltra is arid and its vegetation is dominated by salt bush, prickly pear cactus and Palo Santo trees. A large number of birds can be observed, including boobies and frigate-birds. There are no visitor sites on Baltra, however, there are visitor sites on nearby islands. The popular visitor site of Mosquera is a small, flat, sandy islet almost devoid of vegetation. Mosquera sits in the channel between Baltra and North Seymour. It has one of the largest populations of sea lions and its sandy expanses offer visitors the perfect chance to observe their behavior. It is a beautiful site to observe coastal birds.

Interestingly, the airport offers souvenir shops, a restaurant, telephones and internet access. Land Iguanas, Darwin Finches and lava lizards are all frequently seen at the airport. Most tourists are met at the Galapagos airport by the naturalist guide from a boat and crew, and taken to visit marine sites such as those around North Seymour and Daphne Major and Minor. From the dock you get a glimpse of what your trip will be like. Frigate birds soar high above the azure blue bay while blue-footed boobies dive like shooting arrows from the heights and submerge after fish below.
