Esbjerg (pronounced ess-be-air) is the second largest harbour in Denmark, situated on the west coast of the Jutland Peninsula. It faces the North Sea, on the same latitude as Newcastle in England. The port is busy with fishing, shipping and agricultural exports. Today traffic comes with the wind-turbine industry (3 Gigawatts), off-shore oil and gas services, and container ships. It is not essentially on the tourist path. The city centre can easily be explored on foot.

The town (pop. 115,000) has a number of notable museums and entertainment centres, including Esbjerg Art Museum, Esbjerg Museum and the privately owned Fisheries and Maritime Museum with its seals. The Esbjerg Performing Arts Centre was completed in 1997 to designs by Jan and Jørn Utzon (the latter designed the Sydney Opera House). Sights to see while you walk around are: the Main Square with its old Courthouse Building (now tourist office) and statue of King Christian IX; the Water Tower; and the Railway Station. By the seaside you’ll see an impressive 9 m edifice ‘Man Meets the Sea’ of four men gazing out to sea, the Waterpark, tall ships, marina, and fish markets.

About 60 km from Esbjerg is the original Legoland (1968) at Billund, built near the first Legoland factory. With 1.6 million visitors a year, it is the largest tourist attraction in Denmark outside Copenhagen. Then 30 km to the SE is Ribe with its crooked story-book streets, the Viking Museum, and the Viking Center with activities of special interest to children. Wherever you wander you’ll find churches of many designs and ages. Esbjerg is increasingly recognized for its university and sporting facilities, and hosts an annual music festival.
