The historical town of Zell, mostly known for its Riesling, is a village in the Mosel River valley of Germany that is the biggest wine-growing centre in the Mosel wine region. It was established in ancient times by the Romans who, due to their bacchanalian parties featuring heavy wine drinking, were probably responsible for Zell’s long wine growing tradition. The queen of the vines, the Riesling vine thrives in the mild, bracing climate and on the steep, slated hillsides in the sun. The magnificent panoramic view of the unique river landscape, the steep vineyards and the recreation area ‘Kondenwald’ are a delight to the eyes.

Sadly, the area, known for the steep slopes of the region's vineyards overlooking the river, has a documented history of fatalities among workers while tending the vines. Take a walk around the Old Town and discover the historic buildings with interesting frescoes, a small chapel and even an ancient door. The town offers various museums including the Town Hall museum and the Museum Mittelstrimmig. Then there are the historical half-timbered houses along picturesque winding alleys, many restaurants, cafes and taverns, all of which are worth a visit.

Also be on the lookout for the home town of ‘Zeller Schwarze Katz’, located on the impressive Zeller Hamm river bow, one of the largest wine-producing communities in Germany. An interesting fable about the Schwaze Katz (black cat) label, tells of a black housecat that jealously guarded a barrel of Zeller wine in deference to others held by merchants!
