Gayle was great. Gave us some excellent advice. We got a wheelchair to go onboard and a disabled room. Fantastic."

Founded in 16 BC, Trier is the oldest city in Germany, situated on the banks of the Moselle River near the border with Luxembourg. Trier lies in a valley between low vine-covered hills of ruddy sandstone, in the important Moselle wine-growing region. Of great interest are the Roman amphitheatre, and the 2nd century AD Roman bridge across the Moselle River, which is the oldest bridge north of the Alps, and still crossed by traffic today. Also be sure to visit the Archeological Museum noted for its fine Roman mosaics, and the world's largest hoard of Roman gold coins.

Sights to see include: the 2000 years old Porta Nigra, the best preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps; ruins of three Roman baths; the huge Constantine Basilica of Roman Emperor Constantine; and the Trier Cathedral that dates back to Roman times and is home to the Holy Tunic that in Catholic tradition is said to be the robe Jesus was wearing when he died. Trier has numerous well-preserved Roman attractions worth exploring, the most famous of which is the spectacular fortified gate of Porta Nigra, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 2nd century.

There are numerous museums of great interest, such as Karl Marx House that focuses on the development of Marx’s ideas, and the Landes Museum that has some of the most well preserved ancient Roman artefacts in Germany. The amazing collection includes everything from ancient Roman coins and mosaics to ancient Roman grave markers. Another must-see Roman site is Aula Palatina, now a church, built in the time of Emperor Constantine and fully restored. The building's most impressive feature is Constantine's Throne Room, the world's largest hall from antiquity and home to frequent concerts and events.
