Munich, the capital of Bavaria, located at the river Isar in the south of Bavaria, is famous for its beautiful architecture, fine culture, and the annual Oktoberfest beer celebration. Munich's cultural scene is second to none in Germany. Most Munich residents enjoy a high quality of life, and the city consistently rates among the top 10 with the highest quality of life worldwide. Environmental pollution and the crime rate are low, so its lifestyle has caused the city to be nicknamed Toytown amongst the English-speaking residents. Although it was heavily damaged during World War II the city centre appears mostly as it did in the late 1800s.

Visitors to Munich will be treated to an inspiring mix of historic buildings and impressive architecture. Marienplatz is a famous large square in the city centre. It has been the site for markets since 1158. The City Centre is usually defined as the area within the old city fortifications, now most distinctly recognisable by the traffic loop known as the Altstadtring, although there are many portions of the historical walls still visible. Many of the main tourist attractions can be found in the City Centre. Most notable are: the New City Hall with the world famous Glockenspiel; the Old City Hall; the Feldherrenhalle, the former residence of the Bavarian kings; and the National theatre, to name but a few.

Two large baroque palaces in Nymphenburg and Oberschleissheim are reminders of Bavaria's royal past. The Deutsches Museum or German Museum, located on an island in the River Isar, is the largest and one of the oldest science museums in the world. To relax, be sure to visit the English Garden - larger than Central Park in New York - a very popular scenic park, more international than its name would suggest. It contains a Greek temple, a Chinese pagoda, and a Japanese tea house.
