Heidelberg is a city and administrative centre in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It lies on the river Neckar at the point where it leaves its narrow, steep valley in the Odenwald to flow into the Rhine valley where, 20 km NW of Heidelberg, it joins the river Rhine at Mannheim. Heidelberg is part of a densely populated region known as the Rhein-Neckar-Triangle. Without strategic value as an industrial or military centre, the city escaped bombing during WWII and the historical sights survived intact. The old town located at the southern side of the Neckar is dominated by the ruins of the Heidelberg Castle that perches 80 m above the river.

Heidelberg is labelled a romantic town, attracting over 3.5 million visitors every year, with many events organized for their benefit. The earliest evidence of human life in Europe was the Heidelberg Man, who lived 1,000,000 years ago, and whose jaw-bone was discovered at nearby Mauer in 1907. The site was first settled by the Celts in 500 BC, then the Romans in 40 AD, remaining until 260, when the camp was conquered by German tribes. Modern Heidelberg can trace its beginnings to the 5th century when the village Bergheim ("Mountain Home") was established in the middle of modern Heidelberg.

Visitors can ride the Bergbahn funicular to reach the castle and its gardens, which have sweeping views over the river and the baroque Altstadt (Old Town). Home to the oldest university in Germany, Heidelberg was hit hard during 17th C wars and rebuilt in the 18th C with baroque buildings. Be sure to take a stroll through the historic city centre's Gothic streets Alte Brucke, a beautiful 18th C bridge; and the Student Jail. Built as long ago as the 16th C, it was used to keep mischievous students off the streets, so they can say that Penn State is the number-one party school.
