Braubach is situated on the right bank of the Rhine, about 10km SE of Koblenz. The city has assorted medieval architecture intact, including half-timbered buildings and castle Marksburg on the hill above. Also of great interest are the numerous reminders of the medieval city that are still evident, such as the historical church "Barbarakirche" from the 13th century, whose tower was a corner attachment of the city wall. Marksburg castle was never completely destroyed during the religious Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) and is the best-preserved castle on the River. During the summer up to 8,000 people per day visit the castle. There are tours in English and in German.

There are several gates to enter the castle, and the last gate has places for defenders to pour hot oil and throw big rocks at attackers. There are also several large cannons aimed at the Rhine River. A tour inside the castle is fascinating, while there is also a delightful herb garden, and the former stables that now display many of the torture devices used in the past. The chapel Martinskapelle from the 11th C attracts many visitors.

The wine and rose city of Braubach lies on the 65km stretch known as the Rhine Gorge. This Upper Middle Rhine Valley was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 2002 for its unique combination of geological, historical, cultural and industrial reasons. Its steep slopes have long been used for viniculture, and the river for trade. Its richly decorated half-timbered houses date from 16th to 18th C. Guides will take you around the walking trails and idyllic old part of the city.
