Baden-Baden is a spa town in SW Germany, about 10 km east of the Rhine River, and on the NW border of the Black Forest. (‘Baden’ in German originally meant ‘bath’, and the double name distinguishes it from other spa towns.) There are 29 natural springs in the area. From Roman times celebrities have come here for medicinal purposes. Napoleon III, Queen Victoria, Victor Hugo, Nikolai Gogol and even Marlene Dietrich all took to the waters here. Today, golf, tennis and horse racing are popular in the area, and the countryside is idea for hiking and mountain climbing; in the winter for skiing.

The town’s concert hall attracts some of the world’s best orchestras (including an annual residence by the Berlin Philharmonic). There’s the Museum Frieder Burda dedicated to contemporary art. The Fabergé Museum is a privately owned local museum opened by Russian art collector Alexander Ivanov in 2009. (The most significant item in the museum's collection was the Rothschild Fabergé egg, but the item was taken by Vladimir Putin and gifted to the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.) The town’s tourist information office is an imposing building called the Trinkhalle, with its Corinthian columns and frescoes, housing a collecting of Renaissance paintings.

The famed Casino Baden-Baden is worth a visit for its opulent design and its importance to the town’s history. Fyodor Dostoyevsky is said to have used its famed Casino as the setting for his novel “The Gambler.” The Sophienstrasse is called the “Fifth Avenue of Baden-Baden” with its global brands. Two Roman baths remain: The Friedrichsbad is a strictly enforced, no-clothes-allowed immersion in water, steam, and sauna; and the Caracalla Spa, where you can keep your swimsuit on for much of the time.
