Boa Vista (“Good View”: Portuguese) is the easternmost of the ten islands in the Cape Verde archipelago. It lies 590 km WNW of Dakar, Senegal, in the mid Atlantic Ocean. The highest point is only 387m. There are around 10,000 inhabitants, making it the least populated of the Cape Verde islands. Most live in its largest settlement Sal Rei. The island is known for its dunes, sweeping beaches, and loggerhead turtles. Lying west of the Sahara Desert, it is not surprising to find it has little vegetation with a brown landscape of rocks and sand dunes. Date farming and tourism are of growing importance.

In recent years hotels, villas and self-contained resorts have appeared, along with new port facilities at Sal Rei to the NW of the island. From Sal Rei some visitors take humpback whale watching tours in the shallow surrounding waters. Hike 8km NE to the 1968 wreck of the transport ship Cabo Santa Maria on the coast of Boa Esperança. Ilheu de Sal Rei is an islet less than a kilometre SW of Sal Rei. Here you can explore the Duque de Braganca Fort, built in 1820 to protect the islet from pirates and coastal raiding.

Also in the NW of Boa Vista is the Deserto de Viana, a sand desert 20km by 4km, not far inland from Sal Rei. The island is roughly circular and 30km across. On the west coast is Praia de Chaves, a wide sandy beach with outstanding views over still blue-green waters. Some visitors take quadbike and motor cycle tours around the beaches and across the Sahara-like dunes. There you may come across ruins of an old abandoned village of stone houses.
