The Darien Jungle sits to the SE of the Panama Canal straddling the borders of Panama and Columbia. A large portion of the area is designated a National Park though it still seems vulnerable to deforestation, despite the fact that to this day it is deemed impassable. Eco-tourism is regarded as a great help to this problem. A simple footbridge in the town of Yaviza marks the only break in a 29,000 mile road network known as the Pan-American Highway, stretching from Alaska to Argentina. The 160 km section of impassable jungle between Central and South America is called the Darien Gap.

The jungle has an almost mythical quality to it - a dangerous land full of exotic plants, wildlife, and indigenous people. Largely untouched by the modern world, this is a place where life truly slows down as one travels by a small boat up the Sambu River through tropical jungle abounding with wildlife. Most of the Darien rainforest is roadless, so long Piragua canoes are the primary mode of transportation. Locals with some money are able to afford an outboard motor for it. But most people propel themselves with hand-made wooden paddles — which is difficult due to strong river currents.

Upstream at a remote village of native Choco Indians, visitors are met and escorted by children and subsequently warmly welcomed by the Chocos. Having skin decorated with a black pigment that serves as an insect repellent, they live in open-sided stilted huts with thatched roofs. Above all else visitors will long remember their hospitality. You will be impressed by the fine woven baskets made by the locals from an important resource – a long leafy grass called chunga. The area was made a World Heritage site and is one of the top 10 best bird watching destinations in the world.
