Isla de Providencia (or Old Providence) is part of the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, two island groups 775 k, NW of mainland Columbia. The islands are actually closer to Nicaragua, in the Western Caribbean. Its history includes the Spanish claim in 1510, the settlement of an English Puritan colony in 1629 (with their slave trading and privateering), and the base for pirate Henry Morgan who raided the Sanish Main (the coasts of the region). Forts and cannons dating back hundreds of years can be found scattered all over neighbouring Santa Catalina Island.

With a population of just 5000, just a dozen small hotels and an undeveloped landscape, this is the Caribbean of yesteryear. The locals are more Caribbean than Columbian. UNESCO has declared the island and its seas as a Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, in recognition of the area's immense natural biodiversity. Tourists who do visit Providencia are treated to stunning white sand beaches lapped by the tranquil Caribbean Sea. With the world's third largest barrier reef, Providencia Island is a scuba diver’s dream.

The Old Providence McBean Lagoon National Natural Park. The Park consists of coral reefs, small Cayes, mangroves, lagoons and tropical dry forest. The Park includes Crab Caye on the NE side, and a visitor centre is accessible by boat. Trek into the interior of Providencia Island to see wildlife, rainforest and waterfalls. Hike to El Pico (330m), the highest point on the island, and absorb the spectacular views of the distant reef. Go horseback riding around the island and along the beaches, or hire a golf buggy or moped to explore the island (8km by 4km). If time permits, have a local fisherman take you on a tour to visit some of the tiny little surrounding islands.
