Gorgona Island lies 56 km off the Pacific coast of Colombia. The island was used as a prison for only the worst-of-the-worst criminals until 1983 when it was turned into a National Natural Reservation Park noted for a large number of endemic species, the richly varied wildlife of the sub-tropical forest, and the coral reefs offshore. The Island is also one of Colombia's best spots for whale watching, especially from July to September when humpback whales and their newborn are often seen.

The prison is now derelict, complete with swinging monkeys and a range of other animal and plant life, and makes for an intriguing visit. Gorgona Island also has a few unspoilt sandy beaches, and the area is great for nature tours, bird watching, snorkelling and scuba diving. The whole travel experience is like none other. The island got its name for the many poisonous snakes that make it their home, so obey all instructions on footware.

With no permanent population, except staff involved in the administration and preservation of the National Park, and while it does have a restaurant, one appreciates the solitude and the ‘going back in time’ feel. Also of interest to visitors are the fascinating off-shore rock formations and the predominantly steep plunging cliffs that line the shores. It has often been referred to as the second ‘Devil's Island’.
