Sanya is located on the southern end of Hainan Island in the South China Sea, on a peninsula parallel to the mainland coast of China, and linked to the mainland by bridges. Being the southern-most tip of China, it is often called ‘Oriental Hawaii’. Renowned for its two main tourist beaches, there are numerous other activities on offer. There are two hot springs within a half-hour’s drive, a tiger and crocodile restoration centre, nearly deserted rainforest parks, scuba diving on reefs of red coral, and day boat trips to small nearby islands. One of the favourites is Monkey Island, where a colony of 1,800 macaques roams freely.

It’s refreshing to know that Sanya’s air quality ranks second in the world according to a 1995 assessment by the World Health Organisation, and with the average annual temperature of 25 degrees C it is an enticing winter lure. Add to this a pair of rivers winding through town, miles of undeveloped coastline, and verdant hills carpeted with rainforest, and you will long remember your visit to this growing tourist destination. You may also want to head to Wuzhizhou Island or further north to visit unspoiled and natural scenery. There are no McDonald's, but there is a fresh and plentiful supply of seafood.

Great crowds visit the modern statue of Kwan Yin at the buddhist Nanshan Temple complex, 30 km to the west of Sanya. But mainly visitors stroll along the beaches near to the city, enjoy water activities, and observe the ethnic mix of cultures. Taste the local dishes from either a top seafood restaurant or a roadside stall.
