Abidjan is the biggest and most important city of Cote d’Ivoire, and has historically been the economic power base of the region. The city stands in Ebrie Lagoon, on several converging peninsulas and islands, connected by bridges, facing south to the Gulf of Guinea. It boasts a large selection of restaurants, as well as a range of fascinating places to visit. These include: the city’s zoo, a really beautiful place with loads of interesting animals; St Paul's Cathedral, which though sadly in disrepair, has amazing indoor stained glass features; and the city's other main religious buildings the Treichville Mosque, the Cocody Mosque, and the Plateau Mosque.

Abidjan remained the capital of Ivory Coast after its independence from France in 1960. This French-speaking city of about 5 million is an important seaport (second largest in Africa), and industrial and economic centre with an unusual number of skyscrapers for Africa ("Manhattan of the tropics"). (The capital of Cote d’Ivoire is actually the city of Yamoussoukro.) There are beaches around the lagoon, with palm and coconut trees, which are very popular at weekends for pineapple and coconut sellers.

Then there’s the Cocody Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art, The Parc du Banco rainforest reserve, the National Library, the National Museum, and the Plateau that is a district of Abidjan with a number of shops and parks. If interested in original gifts and funky home decor, then be sure to visit Createur de Bonheur. For those who simply wish to relax, be sure to take a trip to Bassam, Abidjan's number one beach.
