Queen Maud Gulf - named for Queen Maud of Norway - is located between the N coast of the mainland and the SE corner of Victoria Island in Nunavut, Canada. The Queen Maud Gulf Migratory Bird Sanctuary is Canada's largest federally owned protected area, encompassing some 61,765 km2 of the Arctic Circle coastline. The landscape has countless shallow lakes and huge expanses of arctic lowland. It is home to one of the greatest concentrations of nesting geese on earth. Avid birdwatchers visiting Nunavut enjoy viewing exotic arctic avian species that are not found in temperate or tropical latitudes.

In the springtime, as the sea ice begins to break up, travelling by dogsled is a wonderful, traditional Inuit way to be transported to the floe edge for viewing marine mammal and avian wildlife species. Ranging from beginner to expert level, Nunavut has some of the most beautiful waters for canoeing in the world. At specific times of the year - such as when summer arrives - communities stage celebrations and games. Featuring live music, dancing, theatrical performances and circus acts. Also on offer are feasts of traditional Inuit foods that are prepared for one and all to enjoy.
