Dundas Harbour is an abandoned settlement on the southern coast of Devon Island, Canada’s 6th largest island. Dundas Harbour lies on the eastern shore of the harbour of the same name, and is situated 880 km north of the Arctic Circle. Croker Bay is immediately to the west. Throughout the 20th C a number of attempts at settlement were made there, but all that remains as evidence are a few isolated huts and one of the most northerly cemeteries in the world. Their only caretakers may be small thick-coated muskox with their long curved horns.

Separating Dundas Harbour and Baffin Island to the south is the 85km wide Lancaster Sound, which lies on the Northwest Passage sea route that connects the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Sound is commonly covered with ice for 9 months of the year, and Innuit fish there for Arctic cod. Abundant are many species of whales, seals, walrus, polar bears and bird life. In recent years passing cruise ships will have experienced the Arctic weather that certainly provides an understanding of the very difficult conditions faced by the original inhabitants.

At nearby Croker Bay there is the opportunity to marvel at freshly cut icebergs. For the energetic there may be the opportunity to don yellow jackets and paddle a Zodiac in Dundas Harbour. Dundas Harbour is distantly surrounded by 28 Innuit communities that are part of Canada’s Nunavut Territory, roughly a square of settlements spread over 2000km by 2000km, with a total population of only 32,000.
