Port Alberni is a city located at the headwaters of the Alberni Inlet, Vancouver Island's longest inlet on the west coast. The region has a rich tribal history, and ancient petroglyph carvings can be found at Sproat Lake. European settlement began in the late 17th century, with fur trading, sawmilling and gold mining being the main economic drivers. Port Alberni and the West Coast of Vancouver Island is the traditional territory of the Tseshaht and Hupacasath First Nations of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council. Today, the town is a major service and supply centre for west coast communities, and is developing quickly as a tourism destination.

Port Alberni is a deep water port, and local industry centres on the forest industry, with local timber mills and paper manufacture. Harbour Quay and Victoria Quay include shops, restaurants, and art galleries along the inlet. At Victoria Quay the fall, during dusk and low tide in the inlet, black bears can be viewed walking along the other side of the quay looking for fish. Interestingly, the highest vertical drop waterfall in Canada, Della Falls, is located at the western end of Great Central Lake, about 50 km west of Port Alberni.

The area's amenities, such as the natural beauty of the area, the opportunities for fishing (both marine and freshwater), also as a jumping-off point for new outdoor recreation and ecotourism activities such as hiking, kayaking, and mountain-biking, lend themselves to these activities very well. There's kayaking, ATV touring, windsurfing, and a glider company. Sockee salmon spawn in Great Central and Sproat lakes. Port Alberni was awarded the World Fishing Network’s coveted “Ultimate Fishing Town” designation in 2010.
