About 100 km upriver from Manaus in Brazil, near the township of Novo Airao on the Negro River, is Anavilhanas, the world’s largest archipelago of 400 river islands, with hundreds of lakes, channels and watercourses. The islands are covered with native forest, forming a real natural labyrinth. Creatures commonly found in the area but which are becoming rare elsewhere are Pink River Dolphin, Gray River Dolphin, River Otter and also Giant River Otter. During the dry season the receding waters reveal several white sand beaches and interesting natural formations of roots and trunks.

Here you are truly in the heart of the Amazon. Thread the creeks in a native canoe, fish for piranha, or visit the amazing tree-top Ariau Jungle Lodge. With naturalist guides and a thoughtful itinerary, the guests observe exotic plants and animals for which the Amazon is famous. Visitors may also engage in wildlife viewing as larger animals such as jaguars, pumas, tapirs and deer, return to the islands. Over 120 different kinds of birds are seen on each trip.

Should visitors want to go swimming, they are very likely to share the warm waters with schools of friendly dolphins. Still very common are Macaw Parrots, Toucans and spectacular birds like Harpy Eagles. During the rainy season the river is high and islands are almost all flooded with around 180 emerging from the water. The Amazon is a destination that lives in the world's imagination. There will always be travelers interested in visiting the wildest rainforest the world has ever known.
