Angra dos Reis (“Anchorage of the Kings”), famous for its beautiful and pristine setting, is a Brazilian municipality located in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro state. It is a ferry terminal and one of the busiest ports in Brazil. The port has an industrial side: supertankers, railway head, steel town, oil refinery and nuclear power plants. Surrounding the city are hills, the source of landslides from 2010. Today Angra is a centre for tourism. So, focus on the green side: great beaches, and especially the ferry ride to Ilha Grande. Incidentally, former three-time Formula One world champion Ayrton Senna once made his residence here.

Angra includes in its territory 365 offshore islands. Among all its islands, Ilha Grande, 12 km south of Angra, is undoubtedly the most visited and most popular. This is due to its trails, waterfalls, and deserted beaches, for having housed a prison for almost 60 years, as well as for being home to pristine remnants of Brazil's Atlantic rainforest. In addition to this, it is not only a hotspot for biodiversity and conservation, but it also has some of the largest remaining populations of many endangered species.

The countless beaches and pristine waters are perfect for swimming or scuba diving. Angra dos Rios itself is also a popular getaway. To know well this part of the Fluminense Green Coast, one must travel by boat, being able to see the crystalline waters, and the mansions of the rich and famous erected on private islands. Have a share in doing some trekking along scenic paths and around waterfalls, and be sure to do some snorkelling. It’s difficult to imagine that in the past, slave ships arrived at this port with hundreds of slaves, to supply forced labour in the coffee plantations of the region.
