Silistra is a city and administrative centre of a Province in NE Bulgaria, located on the south bank of the Danube River at the country's border with Romania. There are many historical landmarks such as a very well preserved 4th C. Roman Silistra tomb with its vaulted sepulchre, and remains of the Medjidi Tabiya fortress completed in 1853, both of which are extremely interesting. In the fortress the rich mural painting of a geometrical design with animal and human figures, hunting scenes, and a family couple with their maid-servants, is of exceptional artistic and historical value. Parts of the ancient Roman wall are also found in different parts of the town.

The Romans undertook major building projects, including: churches, basilicas, baths and private houses, water conduits, marble statues, and beautiful large public buildings with attractive bas-reliefs, which add to the beauty and history of this city. The historical and ethnographic museum in the town gives detailed information for the history and lifestyle in Silistra. The Thracian rock cult complex called ‘Badjaliyata’, which is situated in a picturesque canyon, is also worth visiting. Visitors should not miss to try the local delicious cuisines and wines from the region. A visit to the UNESCO listed biosphere reserve Srebarna, just 16 km from Silistra, is an unforgettable experience.

The reserve has been listed as having the highest international nature protection status, as the nature here is truly unique. Srebarna has been a Nature Reserve since 1948, due to the great biological diversity of the Reserve’s inhabitants. Several globally threatened animals reside in the lake - the Dalmatian pelican, the pygmy cormorant, and the medicine leech, to name but a few. It is also home to numerous species of birds. The reserve has an Ecological research and visitor station and from there a trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking the pelican colony.
