Burgas (or, Bourgas) is the second-largest city and seaside resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. At the end of the 19th century the city had fewer than 3000 inhabitants. Burgas Bay turned out to be very favourable for the navy, and the Port of Burgas developed in the beginning of 20th C. Trade and industry are the driving force of the city even today. Public transport runs regularly from 5 am to 11 pm. There are both buses and trolleys. There are also small mini-buses that run regularly and cover some routes of the city. Built by the sea and surrounded by lakes, Burgas offers relatively mild weather characterised by cooler summers and warmer winters.

The city is used as a starting point to visit the picturesque century-old towns Nesebar and Sozopol. If you wish to relax, the shady Sea Garden Park situated very close to the central beach of the city with its small zoo and even a casino, is appreciated by many. The surrounding coastal Burgas Lakes with their individual points of interest such as salt mines, nesting sites for a large range of birds, and nearby mineral water baths, also make a delightful tour as does the village of Kraimorie.

The architecture of this key cultural and tourist centre is fascinating, with the Opera House and varied churches and a cathedral well worth visiting. The District Museum of History, with its archaeological hall and a rich collection of items dating back to the old colonies, is one of the most impressive sights. The Ethnographic Museum with its exhibitions of masks, traditional costumes, ritual accessories, fabrics and embroidery is also of particular appeal to visitors. The Museum of Nature and Science has well over a thousand fine displays and appeals to many, as does the Art Gallery with icons painted by renowned Renaissance artists.
