Ghent, the capital city of East Flanders Province, is located at the junction of the Scheldt and Lys rivers in the Flemish region of Belgium, and is regarded as one of the premiere travel destinations in Europe. Archaeological evidence shows human presence going back as far as the Stone Age and the Iron Age, as well as settlements by the Celts and Romans. Amazingly much of the city’s medieval architecture remains well preserved and restored. Its old centre is also home to the largest car-free area in Belgium and features the Saint-Nicholas Church, the Belfry, the St Bavo Cathedral, the Gravensteen Castle, and scenic Graslei.

The Museum of Fine Arts and the City Museum of Contemporary Art are very popular with visitors as they include a very broad range of exhibits. Then there is the House of the Aljin family where theatre and puppet shows for children are presented. In addition, for historians, there is the museum MIAT that displays re-creations of workshops and stores from the 1800s, with original spinning and weaving machines. Of importance to many is the Ghent City Museum that is committed to preserving both the past and the present for future generations. It's surprising how Belgium has managed to stay so quiet about Ghent for so long.

Also of attraction to visitors, are the large number of restaurants that offer Flemish foods and local delicacies. These include ‘Stoverij’, a classic stew made with the addition of a strong abbey beer, and ‘Waterzooi’, another stew made of either fish or chicken supplemented with a large beer on the side. Of particular interest is the fact that the city promotes a meat-free day on Thursdays in recognition of the detrimental environmental effects of meat production. If there on a Thursday, look out for a ‘veggie street map’. Once an unsung treasure of a town, it is now one of the best places in Europe for culture.
