Willis Island is the southernmost of a group of three islands in an external territory of Australia, the Coral Sea Islands Territory (where Nemo lives), 420 km east of Cairns. The island is about 500m by 150m, 9m high, surrounded by coral cays and sand dunes. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has a weather monitoring station that covers one fifth of the island, set up in 1912 to monitor cyclones, It is permanently staffed by four people. This is the only permanently inhabited island in the Coral Sea Islands Territory. Visiting ships may drop anchor or slowly cruise by; there’s no wharf or jetty.

The unique sea birds around Willis Island that include thousands of masked, brown and red footed boobies - a sea bird that looks like a dressed-up seagull - are a joy to watch. One of the boobies' strange habits is to pretend to have a broken wing if a human gets near one of their nests. Hopping away, the ‘wounded’ booby tries to lead the approaching person astray. Many other birds also wheel around the island, including wedge-tailed shearwaters, sooty terns and common and black noddies. If you’re lucky, you may see the daily launch of a hydrogen weather balloon.

Willis Island is a rookery for green turtles. You might see them swimming near the island or enjoying the sun. Green turtles can grow to just over a metre in length. Masked, Brown and Red-footed Boobies that cry out nearly 24 hours a day. Apart from the sea birds and turtles, consider the weather station: the extremely isolated living experiences, despite the modern amenities provided for the dedicated workers on this, the only populated island in the Coral sea. Cruising by this island in international waters means the on-board duty free stores can do business. That’s why you visit Willis Island.
