Port Davey, located on the south-west coast of Tasmania, adjacent to Bathurst Harbour, is a region prone to harsh weather conditions, though it is somewhat sheltered from the Roaring Forties that buffet these coasts. The Port Davey Marine Reserve – created to protect this extraordinary underwater world – lies within the South-west National Park and the Tasmanian World Heritage Area.

Surrounded by gold-green ranges, with bony quartzite ridges, rising sharply from the southern ocean, four major rivers and numerous creeks, drain their rust-coloured waters into the marine reserve. Small islands dot the surface of the dark waters and the shoreline includes several sheltered bays and inlets fringed with white quartzite sand, while Mt Rugby rises grandly from the western shore of Bathurst Harbour. On a fine calm Summer's day, the waters reflect the landscape to endless perfection.

The underwater landscape is affected by a deep layer of dark red-brown, tannin-rich freshwater, overlying tidal salt water, and the resultant darkness limits the growth of marine plants. In their place live colourful and delicate marine invertebrates! Away from the influence of the freshwater tannins, diverse kelp forests and abundant fish thrive. No roads, no civilisation, just pure wilderness!
