Macquarie Island is a sub-Antarctic island (54.5 deg.S) that is part of the state of Tasmania, Australia, located in the Southern Ocean. It lies 1500 km from Tasmania, and 1000 km from New Zealand. The island is rectangular, 32 km by 5 km, running N-S. The Australian Antarctic Division maintains a permanent base, the Macquarie Island Station, on the 130 m wide isthmus at the northern tip of the island at the foot of Wireless Hill. The island has a tundra climate with occasional snow. Its southerly position attracts hardy travellers and is a popular tourist destination, with its wild land and seascapes

The island is the only place on earth where rocks from the earth's mantle are exposed above sea-level. A World Heritage Area since 1997, the governments of Australia and New Zealand restrict visitor numbers. It is home to 80,000 Southern elephant seals that grow to weigh three tonnes, sub-Antarctic fur seals, King penguins, and 3.5 million seabirds including albatrosses and giant petrels. The east coast is protected from the rough seas and is home to Royal Penguin rookeries and many species of seabirds. It is one of only a very few islands in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean where fauna can breed.

Despite the apparent lethargy of elephant seals, they can react with extreme agitation when annoyed. Both elephant seals and three other varieties of fur seals breed on the island, as do the most common sea birds the skua, as well as albatrosses and petrels. The project to eradicate rabbits, rats and mice from Macquarie Island was declared a success in 2014, and grasses have regrown. It is claimed that fewer people have been to Macquarie Island than have climbed Mt Everest.
