Montague Island, is 9kms offshore from Narooma on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. Its unique environment is jealously guarded by National Parks & Wildlife Services. With its pleasant cool summers and winter temperatures reaching approximately 10 degrees C, it is famed for its little penguin colonies-best viewed between September and March-, as well as whale watching in September and October.

The island and its surrounding waters are teeming with wildlife, including shearwater, crested tern and silver gull breeding habitats and eastern Australia's most northerly fur seal colony. Forty-nine species of fauna have been recorded on the island, possibly due to the fact that there are no foxes or feral cats on the island. . The northern tip of the island is the seasonal home to a seal bachelor colony, but due to the site's remoteness, it is only possible for visitors to see them from a boat.

Don't miss walking up the steep paved path, past penguin breeding boxes to Montague Lighthouse and the restored lighthouse-keepers quarters. Photos and documents that record its working life, provide a fascinating insight to the life of isolation led by its keepers and their families. There is also a small cemetery on the bare landscape. The island certainly gives us an understanding of times past, as well as hope for the future, with the very positive conservation projects currently under way!
