Maria Island is a mountainous island-in the shape of a figure eight- just 4kms off the east coast of Tasmania, a short ferry ride east from Triabunna, which is a one and a half hour road trip north-east of Hobart. From Aboriginal contact to whaling and sealing post, from penal settlement to Italianate rural utopia and health resort, Maria Island inspired both intense sorrow and huge dreams in its long history of human habitation.

Today, Maria Island National Park covers the entire island, and it is a wildlife refuge, home to the threatened Cape Barren goose, Forester Kangaroo and Flinder's Island wombat, which thrive amongst the few remaining buildings. You can 'touch history' at the Penitentiary in Darlington, which was built in the first convict era, or if you enjoy scuba diving you'll find a rich underwater environment in the marine reserve at the island's northern end.

Other activities include: walking, where even if you keep to the shore or cliff tops, you may catch sight of dolphins, whales, seals and sea eagles; bicycling; swimming; snorkelling; bird watching; wildlife observation; or simply relaxing! The spectacular Fossil Cliffs walk allows you to use you imagination to conjure up past scenes of mining lime deposits, or the reality of a once-thriving settlement. The experience is one of being a world away from the 21st century!
