Launceston is Tasmania's second largest city and is situated in the north of the island state, at the junction of the North Esk, South Esk, and Tamar Rivers. One of Australia's oldest cities - visit the Penny Royal World and Gunpowder Mill - it was the first to have underground sewers and the first to be lit by hydroelectricity.

There are many interesting attractions including the Cataract Gorge, not far from the city, with the longest single span chairlift in the world stretching 308 m – a great ride. City Park, one of many in the city, is home to Albert Hall. Other sights are a large enclosure for Japanese Macaque monkeys, the General Post Office dating back to the 1880s, and the Tasmanian Zoo.

The city is compact and its colourful Victorian and Edwardian homes line the hillsides along the river banks. It has one of the best regional galleries in Australia - the Queen Victoria Museum at the Inveresk Cultural Precinct that also includes the Tramway Museum with a host of historical memorabilia. Enjoy the activities at the modern Launceston Aquatic Centre, as well as the art and craft galleries and quality restaurants.
