Lady Elliott Island - ‘Home fo the Manta Ray’ - 110 acres in area and only 5 m at its highest point, lies 75 km east of the coast of Queensland, Australia. It is owned by the Commonwealth of Australia. The island is the southernmost coral cay of the Great Barrier Reef, which extends 2600 km to the north. The island is a cay formed from pebbles rather than sand, cemented by guano, the mining of which destroyed much of the original tree population. Recent efforts to re-vegetate the island have restored seabird life.

The island is bisected by a 600m grass airstrip that runs daily flights from three mainland airports. The Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort lies within the ‘Green Zone’ of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Lowset bungalows and eco-tents are set amongst palms and two pathways leading to white sand beaches, shallow corals, nesting birds and blue seascapes. A walk around the island takes 30 minutes. Guided activities on the island include reef walking, glass bottom boat/guided snorkel tours, island history tours, bird watching tours and turtle treks in season. Be amazed of the 200 kg green turtles returning to their nesting grounds

The exceptionally clear water in the surrounding coral reef is great for scuba diving and snorkelling. On old white 15m lighthouse on the west of the island has been superseded by a new 21m light steel skeletal tower. Lady Elliot is also famous for its resident population of manta rays, aside from dolphins and reef fish. Visitors invariably give the island top marks for their Great Barrier Reef experience. There are also flights over the island on offer. Visiting vessels anchor off shore and tender, though not using the resort’s facilities, but there is a small shop. When reef-walking, be aware of the safety procedures.
