Exmouth is a small resort town situated just north of the Tropic of Capricorn, 1100km north of Perth in Western Australia. The location was a WWII military base, and the town was established in 1967 to support the nearby US Naval Communication Station. Some structures are still used by the Australian navy. The town lies on the eastern shore of North West Cape, facing Exmouth Gulf. Exmouth Gulf Station is a 923 sq.km. pastoral sheep lease that also lies on the eastern side of the Cape. Within its area the first significant oil strike in Australia was made in 1953, 54km south of Exmouth at Rough Range.

Today the town (pop.2200) relies on tourism, offering “Range to Reef” tours. A visit to the Exmouth Marina, with its cafes, restaurants and boutiques is relaxing. Cape Range National Park is half an hour drive SW of the town, with its gorges, over 700 caves, canyons, wildlife, and wild flowers. Yardie Creek, a spectacular gorge where the water is trapped by a sandbar, is located within the park. Look out for emus, wallabies, kangaroos, wild flowers, and giant ant hills. Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, the naval communications station, and WWII relics can be seen 14km north of Exmouth.

Ningaloo Marine Park and reef lies to the west of North West Cape, 15 km from Exmouth. Off the local beaches is an underwater paradise for snorkellers, with vibrant coral, brightly coloured fish, dolphins and manta rays in clear turquoise water. A range of scuba dive sites to suit all levels of experience is available. A cruise aboard a semi-submersible with expert commentary provides excellent photographic opportunities. Between June and October take a boat tour to see migrating whales. Exmouth is hot, semi-arid with an average temperature range from 25 to 35 deg.C., dry early summer and monsoonal late summer.
