The Lacepede Islands (aka the Lacepedes) are a group of four islands in the Indian Ocean off the NW coast of Western Australia, 120 km north of Broome and 30 km from the mainland. They are all small and low-lying, being composed of coarse sand and coral rubble and are important breeding grounds for green turtles and colonies of seabirds including frigates, boobies and terns. In the late 1800s the mining and extraction of ‘guano’ (phosphate) from the islands was a lucrative extra for whalers hunting humpback, sperm and blue whales in the region. These days the main attraction is to photograph the thousands of breeding seabirds.

The volume of birds on both islands is staggering and the diversity of species offers the birdwatcher an experience that’s hard to beat. With the successful eradication of rats - inadvertently introduced by whalers and pearlers - the islands are now a Class A Nature Reserve. The breeding colony of brown boobies, of up to 18,000 breeding pairs, is possibly the largest in the world.

Historically, the 'American incident’ over mining rights, initiated by the planting of the United States flag by Gilbert Roberts and thus claiming ownership for the USA, was resolved in 1876. At the time it provoked an international incident. The Lacepede Islands were also used by blackbirders as a place to maroon kidnapped Aboriginal people before signing them up to work on pearling boats.
