Kuri Bay is located in NE Western Australia, 370 km NE of Broome, and opens into the Indian Ocean. Surrounded by red cliffs, the bay is sheltered from inclement weather. With its tropical savannah climate, it is home to Australia's first cultured pearl farm, founded in 1956, one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. Kuri Bay is named after Tokuichi Kuribayashi of Nippo Pearls, the Japanese company that provided the technical expertise to the early farming joint venture. The 20-plus buildings of Kuri Bay Paspaley Pearl Farm are the base of one of the biggest and most well-known pearl farms in the world. Interestingly, it cultured a perfect 20 million dollar pearl.

The region has the second biggest tidal movement in the world. Pearl farm workers head for the open sea daily to pull and chip. Hike into the bush to find Aboriginal cave drawings, explore the gravestones on nearby islands, swim in natural springs, and visit nearby waterfalls surrounded by dusty red earth. Look out for snakes, green tree frogs, dingos and sharks. Kuri Bay is part of the Prince Regent Nature Reserve where more than half of the mammal and bird species in the Kimberley – the size of California – can be found. This real wilderness country is a place where nature has remained virtually unchanged since European settlement.

With an abundance of varieties of fish, fishing is very popular, but State/Territory regulations must always be checked. All can enjoy wilderness walking, animal viewing, bird-watching, or take a Scenic Flight. Augustus Island is located to the north of the bay, and with no known feral animals and isolation from the mainland, it is an ideal habitat for endangered species. A small classy resort for fly-in guests opened in 2012. The only access is by boat or seaplane.
