Cooktown, Australia's first European settlement, was charted and settled by Captain Cook and his crew in 1770. It is a small frontier town located on the Endeavour River (named after Captain Cook's ship) in far north tropical Queensland. A century later thousands, including many Chinese, came to Cooktown, the port for the Palmer River gold rush, leaving a fascinating history that can be explored at the James Cook Historical Museum. A visit to Grassy Hill Lookout is a 'must-see' as one can experience 360 degree views of the appealing tropical countryside and pristine beaches. There is also a walking track from the summit to the nearby beach at Cherry Tree Bay.

The Botanic Gardens are home to one of Australia's oldest cricket ovals, the Chinese and Solander Gardens, as well as interesting native flora and great birdlife. Also on offer is the opportunity to spend either a half or full day river and reef fishing. Then there are the croc-spotting tours for both adults and children that include a money back guarantee if no crocs are seen. For some amazing photos, Keatings Lagoon is a little gem. The short walk takes you through some wonderful vegetation ending up in a bird hide overlooking a wonderfully colourful and vibrant lagoon.

Take a tour with an Aboriginal elder for an honest discussion, perspective and interpretation - along with story telling - of his ancestral rock art, high in the hills above Cooktown. The unspoilt natural beauty of the area, including cascading waterfalls, is made all the more appealing due to its years of geographic isolation and subsequent austere life. Visitors really feel as though they have stumbled back in time. Cooktown truly boasts a unique history. Be aware of the strict limits on swimming in these areas, especially in the summer months.
