The Buccaneer Archipelago is a group of 800 to 1000 rocky islands off the coast of Western Australia, near the town of Derby in the Kimberley region. William Dampier sighted the Archipelago in 1688, and it was named in 1821 by Captain Phillip Parker King "in commemoration of William Dampier’s visit". The islands are located in Yampi Sound, between King Sound to the south and Collier Bay to the north. Yampee is the local Indigenous peoples’ word for water. In the 1880s pearling luggers operated here, and more recently open-cut mines on Koolan and Cockatoo Islands extracted iron ore, up to 97% pure ferric oxide. A copper mine also operated at Coppermine Creek on the mainland.

The islands are rugged and sparsely vegetated with patches of rain forest in moist areas and a fringing of mangroves. The area has huge tidal ranges up to 12 metres. These create the horizontal reversible waterfall in Talbot Bay, when the tide flows between narrow island gaps. Estuarine crocodiles are common in the waters and mangroves. Sea snakes, sharks, swordfish and a great variety of tropical fish are found in the pristine waters and coral lagoons. White-bellied Sea Eagles, Brahminy Kites, Ospreys, Common Sandpipers and Eastern Reef Egrets inhabit the archipelago. Yampi Sound is also occasionally a calving ground for humpback whales.

The coastline of Yampi shows rock layers wildly twisted and contorted into great folds, which in turn is an attraction for bottlenose dolphins that come here to feed. Aboriginal rock art is found on many islands and the adjacent mainland. During World War II, several raids were launched against the Japanese forces in Borneo and Java using Catalina Flying Boats by the Royal Australian Air Force from Cockatoo Island.
