Salzburg is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital of the federal state of Salzburg, on the banks of the Salzach river, at the northern boundary of the Alps. Earliest human settlements at Salzburg were by the Celts and in 15 BC they were merged into one city by the Romans. The name Salzburg literally means "Salt Fortress", and derives its name from the town’s tax revenue from the barges carrying salt on the Salzach river. Salzburg's "Old Town" (Altstadt) with its world famous baroque architecture is one of the best-preserved city centres north of the Alps, and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

The city is noted for three main features: its Alpine setting; as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; and the setting for parts of the musical and film The Sound of Music, which features famous landmarks in Austria, but focuses mainly on Salzburg. Some of the numerous sights for visitors include: Salzburg old town, clifftop fortress Hohensalzburg Castle (with panoramic views of the city), Salzburg Cathedral, Palace of Mirabell (with its famous fountain), Mozart landmarks, ‘Sound of Music’ locations; and the modern Hangar-7 (display of historical aircraft). At peak tourism times visitors outnumber residents of the city!

Salzburg is a city with a burgeoning arts scene, fine Austrian food, well-kept parks, numerous side streets where classical music emanates from open windows, and concert halls that function 365 days a year. Everywhere you go, take in the scenery, the baroque architecture, the music and the history. There are many companies that run Sound of Music Tours. Take a half-day tour to the Eagles Nest (Hitler’s former retreat) in Berchtesgaden across the Königsee River Valley.
