Grein is a small municipality located on the north bank of the Danube River, in the district Perg in the federal state of Upper Austria. First settlement appears in the 11th century with the economy based on river traffic. The pilots of Grein navigated vessels through the hazardous nearby waters and laid the foundation for the prospering middle-classes. The main square with its Renaissance Baroque and Biedermeier houses is a wonderful testimony of this period. Attractions abound here, particularly the Gothic Parish Church, and the Castle Greinburg which has one of the largest and most beautiful Arcadian courtyards from the late Renaissance.

The exhibits of the castle are outstanding with one entire room in mosaic tiles, including the ceiling. The mariners’ museum portion is excellent for anyone with an interest in navigation, while the pottery from the 15th century should not be missed. Then there’s the Gothic cell-vault, an impressively large knights-hall with adjoining chapel, and one of the most beautiful Christmas altars in Austria. There are the Coburg rooms - a family museum of the house Saxony-Coburg-Gotha, and the 'not to forget' stone-theatre, which is a jewel from the 17th century.

A remarkable and unique sun dial at Esperanto Square on the river bank, recently designed and built by a local student, ensures the on-going fascination of Grein. The exceptional Historisches Stadttheater Grein – an old former grain storehouse and now an historic theatre - has been operating since 1791 in pretty much the same form as it is today. With few concessions to luxury, it opens a window on the unsophisticated entertainment that was then the height of sophistication. If you are within a half day's distance of Grein, make sure you visit not only the town (lovely) but this unique building.
