Camarones is a small fishing port on the bay of the same name in Chubut Province, Argentina. The Patagonian hinterland is barren, with some grasses and small shrubs, and the coastline is generally rocky. The location a beautiful view of the Patagonian Atlantic coast, surrounded by a very special landscape, where the marine blue of the ocean contrasts with the multi-coloured rocks. At the entrance to the marina is a tower surmounted by a cross and some low battlements. The town itself covers just one square kilometre. To the south of the town is a vacant, wide, 3 km long beach. South of this is penguin colony country.

Twenty-eight kilometres out of town to the SE is the spectacular Cabo Dos Bahias Fauna Reserve, with colonies of Magellanic penguins, sea lions, orcas, whales, guanacos (wild lamas), rheas (like small emus), sea birds, sea lions, foxes and fur seals. Its coasts and fjords are full of mussels, clams, octopuses, and a diverse variety of fish, as well as prairies of algae, which makes sea diving an absolutely fantastic experience. Due to the intriguing variety of both land and sea animals, it is not surprising that it is often called the Living Land. Waling the paths of this area you’ll come across guanacos

In town there’s a small museum of the history of the Peron family. From the windy Plazoleta Nueva Leon where the small tower is, one can think of the wandering of the Spanish conquistadors who settled this region. The beaches are a source of algae that is dried and sold. Look for the Monument to Salmon at the end of the boulevard. But the main attraction is 30 km down the gravel road to penguin colonies and sea lions.
