Deception Island is an active volcano in the South Shetland Islands, off the Antarctic Peninsula, about 920 km south of Argentina. It is administered by the Antarctic Treaty System. The horse-shoe shaped island (diameter 12 km) has a large flooded caldera that opens to the sea through a narrow channel at Neptune’s Bellows, forming a natural sheltered harbour. Its landscape comprises barren volcanic slopes, a number of peaks (to 576m), steaming beaches and ash-layered glaciers. It is one of the few places in the world where vessels can sail directly into the centre of a volcano – Port Foster.

There are Spanish and Argentine summer scientific stations still in use. Remnants of past whaling stations, oil tanks, ruptured buildings, a cemetery and old boats remain. Around 1820 a short seal hunting period drove fur seals almost to extinction. Whaling lasted for around 20 years in the early 20th C. Scientific stations opened in the 1940s, and were abandoned due to volcanic eruptions in the late 1960s. This interesting island has a great number of rare plant species – Antarctic pearlwort with yellow flowers, mosses, algae and lichens. Mount Flora is the first site in Antarctica where fossilised plants were discovered.

Deception Island has become a popular tourist stop in Antarctica because of its several colonies of chinstrap penguins. Baily Head, just north of Neptune’s Bellows, holds one of the world's largest chinstrap rookeries. These penguins, at around 70cm tall, are named for the thin black neck line that appears to hold their black cap on. Baily Head also nests of brown skuas, Cape petrels and snowy sheathbills. Water temperatures to 70 deg.C in some parts, and air to 40 deg.C, offers explorers the novel possibility of making a warm bath by digging into the sands of the beach.
