Dumont d’Urville, is a French research base, named after the explorer of the same name, at Adélie Land, named after the explorer’s wife. It is situated between Pourquoi Pas Point and Point Alden. Discovered in 1840, It is best known for the French research base, rebuilt in 1952.

Of particular note, is the fact that the base is permanently staffed, and that the station allows for 30-40 people to come ashore, at one time, weather permitting. While it is home to resident colonies of Snow Petrels and Adélie penguins, it is the few dozen scientists and logistics personnel who draw the most attention.

Visitors are shown some of the labs, the living area, where they are even offered a hot drink and something to nibble, and the office of the 'Chef de District”, where they can purchase souvenirs. This, together with the opportunity to buy special Antarctic stamps, much sort after by collectors, and some delightful postcards, certainly make the visit unforgettable! The fascination of living an 'Antarctic experience' is extremely powerful.
