Commonwealth Bay is an open bay about 48 km wide at the entrance between Point Alden and Cape Gray in Antarctica. It was discovered by the Australian Antarctic Expedition under Douglas Mawson in 1912. The main base of the expedition was established at Cape Denison at the head of the bay.

It is worthy of note that the Guinness Book of World Records and the Eighth Edition National Geographic Atlas, both list Commonwealth Bay as the ‘Windiest place on Earth’, with wind gusts regularly exceeding 240 km/h. All of this adds a fascination for the numerous visitors.

Mawson's huts historic site, with its timber buildings (living quarters and workshop) of national and international importance, eerie grave sites, and lonely, yet beautiful scenery, makes it an unusual, but fascinating place to visit. The presence of numerous Adelie penguins diving and feeding their chicks, Weddell seals, and the bird species, South Pole Skua and Wilsons Storm Petrel', certainly add to the beauty, especially when seen against the backdrop of the striated icebergs. An inspiring destination for all.
