Cape Adare, at 71.3 deg. South, lies within the Antarctic Circle. It is a generally ice free, prominent, headland at the northern extremity of Victoria Land, East Antarctica. The best months to visit are the summer months of January and February, due to possibilities of pack ice, currents and winds that can cause landings to be kept brief. The southern shore of Ridley Beach is covered with black pebbles and is occupied by one of the largest rookeries in Antarctica, home to almost a quarter of a million pairs of Adelie penguins. They make a make a magnificent sight as they traverse the ice floes and currents travelling around the rookery.

Major features of the area include the ‘living huts’ of a variety of historical expeditions such as Scott’s Northern Party, which although in a state of collapse, when seen with the many other relics distributed around the area, give one a real sense of history. Backed by the high Admiralty Mountains, it is an important symbol of the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration and has considerable historical and cultural significance. It is a fantastic place to visit.
