In the southern Caribbean, Willemstad - on the UNESCO’s world heritage list - is the territorial capital of the island of Curaçao, an island territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The wide range of historical buildings dates back to 1662, and is an impressive blend of Dutch and Spanish colonial styles, together with former West African style slave dwellings in and around the capital. Don’t miss Willemstad’s historic city centre, while other sites include the beautifully restored mansions of Scharloo, Pietermaai, and the Curaçaoan neighbourhoods. Indeed there are 765 preserved historic buildings including Fort Amsterdam, the Governor’s Palace, Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue, and the colourful Penha building on the waterfront.

Curaçao is famous for its excellent natural harbour and coral reefs that can be reached easily without a boat. This encourages visitors to go snorkelling or scuba diving, while others may choose to relax at the beautiful Kenepa beach. Investigate the delightful harbour-front street - Handeslkade - with brightly painted 18thC buildings, and then take the time to be amazed at the Queen Juliana, an amazing floating bridge that opens to allow ships to pass. Many take the trip to Shete Boka National Park to absorb the unusual landscape, crashing surf, and to explore some fascinating caves. The Dolphin Academy provides the opportunity for visitors to swim with the dolphins.

As the lively trading capital of the Southern Caribbean, Willemstad with retailers who deal with items that are a treasure trove of surprises, attracts shoppers from all over the world. Punda with its colourful buildings is home to most of the shops and tourist activities in Willemstad. While there, sit back and relax at one of the many outdoor cafés to enjoy a meal, and absorb the local culture. Alternatively, exhilarating hiking or biking tours of ruggedly beautiful open spaces are also very popular. A semi-arid savannah-like climate results in relatively constant temperatures throughout the year.
