AmaWaterways’ Colours of Provence itinerary offers a relaxed and immersive way to experience southern France, particularly during the festive season. Sailing aboard the elegant AmaKristina, guests can enjoy included excursions, exceptional regional cuisine and beautifully decorated Christmas markets, all delivered with the personalised service river cruising is known for. This voyage is ideal for travellers seeking a culturally rich European escape with a festive touch.

When I was given the opportunity to experience AmaWaterways’ Colours of Provence cruise from Arles to Lyon in the lead-up to Christmas, I eagerly packed my winter gear, ready to enjoy the sights and flavours of France during the festive season.

We flew into Marseille before the cruise, and the following morning it was an easy train journey to Arles to join the ship, with just a short walk from the station. AmaKristina has a warm, modern feel and was beautifully decorated for Christmas from bow to stern, with lights, trees and festive touches, including a wreath on every cabin door.

The lounge is the heart of the ship, a comfortable space to relax while watching the countryside pass by and observing the locks along the way. The Sun Deck offers a variety of seating, along with a plunge pool, a large chess set, a putting green and bikes available for guided tours or independent use.

Our cabin featured a French balcony and was well designed with a modern, comfortable feel and plenty of storage. The floor-to-ceiling windows made it easy to enjoy the scenery as we cruised through the French countryside. Wi-Fi is included, allowing guests to stay connected, and Quietvox headsets were provided for use during shore excursions.

Highlights

Visiting the Lyon Christmas markets, with festive lights, local treats and a lively atmosphere, was a standout seasonal experience.

All shore excursions with AmaWaterways are included, and on full days in port there were typically two options, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Activities cater to different mobility levels, and the small group sizes, along with knowledgeable local guides, provided excellent insight into each destination.

Highlights included visiting the Roman Amphitheatre in Arles and the Papal Palace in Avignon, once the seat of the Catholic Church. Another standout experience was visiting a family-run truffle farm, where we watched trained dogs locate truffles before being welcomed into the family home for wine and tastings.

AmaWaterways is well known for its culinary focus, being a member of La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, one of the world’s oldest gastronomic societies. Sailing through Provence, the chefs showcased regional flavours with dishes such as beef bourguignon, rack of lamb and freshly baked croissants each morning.

To further showcase French cuisine, the onboard chef hosted cooking demonstrations, preparing macarons and crêpes, with tastings included. Breakfast and lunch offered buffet and made-to-order options, while dinner was a four-course experience. One evening, we dined at the Chef’s Table, enjoying a seven-course degustation with paired wines.

Beverages including wine, beer and soft drinks are included with lunch and dinner, along with a daily Sip and Sail cocktail hour, featuring a selection of drinks and providing a relaxed opportunity to socialise with fellow guests.

Cruise Tip

Consider adding a pre or post-cruise extension, as travelling with the cruise director ensures a seamless and well-organised experience beyond the sailing.

Evenings onboard featured a variety of local musicians, offering different styles of entertainment each night.

As this was a festive sailing, we visited Christmas markets in Avignon and Lyon. The Lyon market was a highlight, with rows of illuminated stalls selling handmade crafts, mulled wine and seasonal treats. Back onboard, the festive atmosphere continued with activities such as tree decorating, carolling and even a visit from Santa.

These thoughtful touches were complemented by the attentive crew, who ensured each day ran smoothly, from excursions to transfers and post-cruise extensions. Their warm hospitality created a welcoming environment, reflected in the number of repeat guests onboard.

Overall, AmaWaterways delivers a well-rounded river cruise experience, combining immersive excursions, excellent cuisine and personalised service across its European, Asian, African and South American itineraries.
