Tasiilaq (meaning “the place with a lake”, and known as Ammassalik until 1997) is a town (population 2,000) in SE Greenland, just 106 km below the Arctic Circle, and 760 km due west of Reykjavik in Iceland. It lies on the southeastern coast of Ammassalik Island, lying tightly against the mainland. The research station Sermilik is located 15 km northwest of Tasiilaq on the west coast of the island. Narsarsuaq is a settlement in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland, with a population of around 200. It was the principal city of Greenland in the times of Erik the Red, a murderous Norwegian explorer in the area at the end of the ninth century. Evighedsforden (‘Everlasting Fjord’; also Kangerlussuatsiaq Fjord) in SW Greenland lies just below the Arctic Circle along its 90 km length. Saqqaq is a village on the Nuussuaq Peninsula in the Quaasuitsup municipality of western Greenland, 380km north of the Arctic Circle (April 2017). Nuuk is the capital and largest city of Greenland, as well as being the northernmost capital in the world, though 2 degrees south of the Arctic Circle.
