Carnival Spirit cruises for 2020-2021
From October 2020 Carnival Spirit will home-port year round at Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, currently under construction at the mouth of the Brisbane River and adjacent to Brisbane Airport. Meanwhile, Carnival Spirit leaves Australia for North America and a season along the Alaskan coast. She returns in October 2020 for a six month season. Cruises of 3 to 11 nights visit the Great Barrier Reef, PNG, and the South Pacific islands of Fiji, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia. The three-night ‘taster’ cruises depart Brisbane to nowhere from time to time, so you can get away from the office. In May/June 2021 consider a 13-night Brisbane to Singapore journey or, after her minor refit, a 15-night return journey. Carnival Spirit’s previous re-fit in Singapore gave her a giant pool-side movie screen, and new eateries and bars on the lido deck. Adapting to Australian customs, tips are built into the fare.
Carnival Spirit, carrying 2,124 passengers, gives the feel of not being particularly crowded. After its 2018 modifications Spirit offers 25 bars, lounges and dining options, seven of which are new – try the ‘Boomerang Burger’. Created for the Australian market, there are Australian comedians, and Australian currency and power. On top is the world’s steepest vertical drop waterslide at sea, and Camp Carnival for ages 2 to teens. This “Fun Ship” has a nine-deck-high atrium, unique (to Carnival) dining venues, duty-free shopping mall, video arcade, and creative touches such as museum-quality artwork and “designer” martinis. Carnival Spirit has received top marks from past guests for the quality of its entertainment and facilities for families and children. The Night Owls program also offers nightly babysitting between 10 pm and 3am, which is designed as a “fun filled slumber party at sea” (extra charge).

Accommodation
The 31 cabin categories include interior staterooms, ocean view rooms, ocean rooms with French doors (but no balcony), ocean rooms with private balcony, and five grades of suites. Eighty percent of the cabins are outside; 80 percent of those staterooms have private balconies. Each cabin has a gift amenity basket in its bathroom. All staterooms include flat-screen TVs, safe, mini-bar, beach towels, hair dryer, bathrobes to wear during your cruise, and Carnival Comfort Bed with plush mattresses, good quality duvets, linens and pillows. Standard cabins are a good size. Most with twin beds can be converted to king-size bed. Good design and soft lighting add to a feeling of spaciousness in interior staterooms.
The Junior and Vista Suites have a large lounge and sleeping areas, large bathroom with twin wash basins, bidet, and whirlpool bathtub. The best suites and cabins are those on the aft-facing decks. Suites qualify for priority check-in at port. Some cabins can accommodate a third and fourth person, and most cabin categories are fitted with inter-connecting doors to suit families. There are no single cabins, and 16 wheelchair-accessible cabins. A room service menu is available 24-hours, for a small charge.
Food and Dining
The ship has a single two-deck dining room – the Empire Restaurant – with a choice of fixed-time dining at two seatings, or flexible “Your Time Dining”. Dining assignments can be booked before the cruise. Allow for one or two nights “Dress Elegant”. Menus change daily and service is excellent. Breakfast and lunch are open seating. The Lido Restaurant is an extensive casual eatery, with sections that include small buffet counters, salad counters, a dessert counter, a 24-hour pizzeria, ice cream/frozen yoghurt station, and deli. BlueIguana Cantina Mexican eatery adds to specialty dining options, and Alchemy Bar for premium spirits and cocktails. Children have their own special menu, pizza, and ice cream that will satisfy.
The Nouveau Restaurant (dress up, reservations, cover charge), for steak and seafood with your selected wine, is a superb fine-dining experience not to be missed; also the specialty Bonsai Sushi. At the poolside are Guy’s Burger Joint and Fat Jimmy’s C-side BBQ offering burgers, hot dogs and the like. Hot coffee is available at drinks stations throughout at no cost, but the offerings at the specialty coffee and patisserie European-Style Café are tempting. The Chef’s Table (for 12, reserved) takes you on a galley tour, then fine cuisine (extra charge). Drinks are available at 16 bars. The ship offers 24-hour room service, ranging from basic continental-style breakfast fare to a variety of sandwiches and desserts.
Entertainment
There is something for everyone. Pharaoh’s Palace Main Lounge spanning three decks presents large production shows and cabaret acts backed by a live show band. There’s an alternative show lounge, Versailles Lounge, on the lowest deck. Night is the time for late buffet snacks, R-rated comedy, and lounges and bars to suit every mood, many of which feature live music. Try the popular Piano Bar for sing along with the piano, and the Sports Bar. There’s a poolside giant screen and new adjoining eateries.
Daytime activities include the customary art auctions, karaoke, Hasbro The Game Show, ballroom dancing (with lessons), comedians, bingo, library and Internet Café. Adults have the large action-packed Louis XIV Casino. For adults, an open-air deck called Serenity has a child-free pool, spas, sun lounges and a bar. Take an aerobics class, work out in the gym, refresh with a beauty treatment and massage. There’s a mini-golf course, jogging track, and deck games. Teens enjoy their own parties and movies at Club O2, junior teens at Circle “C”, and pre-teens at Camp Carnival. Entertainment extends to the humungous WaterWorks slides and pools. Late-night child care is available for a charge.
