The Mexican Riviera (a term coined by Princess Cruise Line), extends along the Pacific coast of Mexico, from Ensenada in the north to Huatulco in the south. The 20 or so ports with oceanfront resorts are popular with tourists. Ten ports are around the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) with its abundant water life, and include the popular ports of Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and Mazatlan. Tourists enjoy resort life, sports fishing, water sports, dining and night-partying, shopping and sight-seeing, amidst cultural remnants of the old Mexico and memories of early Spanish explorers.

Five large cruise vessels depart regularly from San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles, offering 3 to 14-night cruises to Mexico. Select the ports you wish to visit – Ensenada in the north, ports on the Baja Peninsula, or travel further south to Puerto Vallarta, Zihuatanejo (where Andy Dufresne of The Shawshank Redemption settled), and Acapulco (with its cliff divers). The Mexican Riviera is also included in trans-Panama sailings between the US west coast and the Caribbean.

From San Francisco: Grand Princess departs regularly to four ports over 10 nights. From Los Angeles: NCL, Carnival and Princess ships run short breaks to Ensenada, and 7- to 10-night cruises to three or four ports near the Gulf of California. From San Diego: Four Holland America Line ships run 7-night cruises to the major ports around the Gulf of California, along with Carnival Miracle. Many cruise ships call at Mexican Riviera ports as they make Panama Canal crossings. Also, check out sectors of World Cruises. Luxury ships offering sectors in this region include Star Legend, L’Austral, and Insignia. In September 2019 Ponant’s Le Soléal offers an explorer cruise from San Diego to seven lesser visited ports along the Mexican coast and south to Guatemala.
