São Francisco do Sul, founded as a village by the Portuguese in 1658, is the third oldest city in Brazil. It lies 340 km SE of the port of Santos and of Sao Paulo. It has a beautiful natural harbour situated on the northern end of the island of São Francisco do Sul at the entrance to the Bay of Babitonga. It is a major commercial port, and in the past decade has become a popular tourist destination.
The city features a beautiful historic waterfront, best seen by foot. The beaches are 22 km and more from the port.
